Juiced Up Jerk or Hall of Famer: The Case for Barry Bonds
Barry Bonds continues his controversial march toward Hank Aaron’s homerun record when baseball resumes tonight after the All Star break. If it were any other player, Bonds would easily be considered one of the greatest in baseball history and his eclipsing of Homerin’ Hank’s 755 home runs would be revered and celebrated. But Bonds is not just any superstar player—his horrible attitude and allegations of massive steroid use have cast a dark shadow on all of his baseball stats and his effort to surpass Aaron. When we consider Barry’s juiced up reputation, will the home run record be legitimate, or will there always be a tiny hypodermic needle sized asterisk by Barry’s name in the record book?

Guests:

Jeff Pearlman, author of Love Me, Hate Me: Barry Bonds and the Making of an Antihero; former baseball writer for Sports Illustrated and currently at Newsday

Ron Barr, an Emmy award winning writer and host of the nationally syndicated sports talk show, Sports Byline USA broadcast out of San Francisco

Death and Heroes
Will Harry take his last broom ride in J.K. Rowling’s seventh and final Potter book, or will the world’s favorite wizard go on forever? When Sherlock Holmes was killed off by Arthur Conan Doyle, his public demanded that he bring back the intrepid detective (which he did ten years later), and Charles Dickens’ public begged him not to let Little Nell die on an ocean voyage (but he did, anyway). How do we react to the death of a hero or heroine we’ve lived with over the years?

Guest:
Craig Svonkin, lecturer in the Department of English at UC Riverside. He organized the Pottermania Conference 2005 at the university, where academics and “wizards” discussed all things Harry.
